PARKERSBURG — A national outdoor retailer will be taking over the space once occupied by Office Depot.

A sign was placed recently at the store, located at 4030 Murdoch Ave., Parkersburg, saying Sportsman’s Warehouse was coming soon.

Lindsey Kerr Piersol, executive director for the Wood County Development Authority, said the store will occupy 27,000-square-feet of space, what the original Office Depot occupied.

“We are always excited to see a vacant space repurposed and look forward to the store opening soon,” she said.

The company, based in West Jordan, Utah, describes itself as “a premier specialty outdoor retailer that provides outstanding gear and exceptional service to inspire outdoor memories,” according to a press release from the company regarding other stores that have opened in other states.

The company sells “brand-name hunting, fishing, camping, shooting sports, apparel, and footwear merchandise at everyday low prices,” the press release said.

“Sportsman’s Warehouse offers a broad selection of top, national brands for the beginner or advanced outdoor enthusiast,” the press release said. “Customers will be serviced by knowledgeable and friendly store associates who use the products and actively participate in a variety of outdoor activities.”

As of October 2022, the company was located in 30 states across the U.S.

Wood County Commission President Blair Couch and Vienna Mayor Randy Rapp said they have seen the sign on the building, but had not heard anything more.

Parkersburg Mayor Tom Joyce said the city welcomes any and all retail business to the area.

Being an avid outdoorsman himself who likes to hunt and fish, Joyce said he is familiar with the company and has been a customer of theirs for many years.

“We are always happy to be able to expand our tax base, but this one hits closer to home for me,” he said.

Officials with the company said they could discuss more details about the new store in early 2023, possibly the end of January or early February.

A proposed opening date has not been announced yet.
