Introducing opportunity, our US Business Development team’s stories

In the United States, the Business Development team integrates origination, M&A, power marketing, wholesale market operations and strategy. While these functions are often siloed at other solar companies, this creative approach has introduced opportunity and efficiency to Lightsource bp’s US business.

One of Business Development’s primary roles is to sell the power produced by our portfolio of solar assets, working closely with energy buyers across sectors and geographies. The team is nimble and adapts with a constantly changing market to provide customized energy solutions that help our customers solve their problems and meet their needs.  Meet some of our US Business Development team members below.

Emilie Wangerman, Senior Vice President, Business Development

Emilie joined Lightsource bp to help create a new type of United States solar developer. In the US organization’s early days, she was involved in building the brand, customer base, project portfolio and team from scratch, breaking into the established US solar industry with a creative approach to business development. Emilie has led her team through deals with customers including corporates, utilities, universities, and government institutions, representing more than 2.8GW of announced power contracts as of spring 2022.  She says she has enjoyed growing within the organization to create an innovative business development model and smart, nimble, and efficient team. Emilie is based in San Francisco.

Caleb Gaddes, Manager, Wholesale Operations

Caleb entered the renewables industry while working towards his law degree. Today he manages non-contracted revenues such as reactive power and capacity for Lightsource bp projects in wholesale power markets. He engages in regulatory rulemaking and wholesale market stakeholder processes to advocate for the company’s interests and advise on how rule changes will impact the business. Caleb says his role is never boring; there are always new issues to learn about and understand. He joined the team in fall 2021 and is based in the Philadelphia office.

Cammie Kirby, Director, Business Development

With an energy background and a degree in sustainability, Cammie was always keen to enter the renewables space. She joined Lightsource bp in 2018, when the US team had signed only one power offtake agreement. Since then, she has worked with major customers including Amazon and Verizon to sign power purchase agreements for Lightsource bp projects in the Midwest. Outside of Cammie’s Business Development scope, she says Lightsource bp’s Responsible Solar approach is what’s most important to her, as it emphasizes the environmental sustainability component in project development. She is based in San Francisco.

Cristina Drivas, Director, Business Development

Cristina joined the team in November 2020 with degrees in economics and law, as well as eight years of experience in power and renewables. She works remotely from Long Island, New York on power origination and portfolio management and optimization. Cristina says she is excited about renewables and enjoys being part of the push to expand solar generation in the United States.

Goran Arya, Senior Director of Business Development, M&A

Goran’s primary role is to originate and acquire solar projects and platform opportunities that help achieve Lightsource bp’s global targets and steer the world towards a green economy. He joined the San Francisco team in October 2021, bringing a mixed academic background in engineering and energy policy and experience in hydropower, solar, energy storage, and wind development in the U.S. and Europe. Goran says he is ecstatic to see large Lightsource bp projects in all corners being deployed around the world, creating jobs and bringing different sectors into the green economy.

Helen Brauner, Vice President, Business Development

Helen has worked in various renewable energy subsectors over 15+ years, most recently serving as Sr. Director of Origination at 7x Energy, Inc.  Helen joined Lightsource bp’s Austin office in the summer of 2021 and focuses on connecting renewable energy buyers with Lightsource bp’s large portfolio of solar and storage projects. Helen loves Lightsource bp’s aggressive, speedy timelines because the world has no time to waste in cutting carbon emissions.

Leonardo Alvian Read, Sr. Analyst, Business Development

Leonardo supports Lightsource bp’s ambitious megawatt targets by identifying and evaluating projects for purchase as part of the M&A team. A New York City native, he works remotely from Brooklyn. Leo attended university in Scotland, cementing his passion for renewables while writing his master’s dissertation at the University of Edinburgh Business School. He says it is rewarding to know he is part of the effort to fight climate change at Lightsource bp.

Martin Hussey, Senior Manager, Business Development

If someone had explained Martin’s current role to him as a college student, he would have thought they were describing his dream job. Today he leads Lightsource bp’s business development and strategy for the Southeast U.S. and has worked on deals to bring clean energy solutions to major customers including Verizon, McDonald’s and eBay. He says he’s astounded by the collaboration Lightsource bp team members employ daily to solve complex problems and bring vitally important clean energy infrastructure to life. Originally from New Mexico, Martin is based out of the company’s San Francisco office.

Nick Gaudio, Business Development Manager

Nick works on solar and storage origination in ERCOT, CAISO and the West as well as US Renewable Energy Credit trading. He enjoys building relationships with business partners to help them meet their environmental targets and combat the effects of climate change. Nick says Lightsource bp is not afraid of a challenge; the company adapts and thrives within a constantly changing industry. Originally from Illinois, Nick today lives and works in San Francisco.

Paige Smith, Senior Analyst, Business Development

Paige joined Lightsource bp from the utility-scale solar EPC world, where she worked as an estimator. With previous experience in technical sales engineering, she made the jump to business development. She says she’s glad to be in a people-focused position, working with a well-rounded and cross-functional team. Paige is passionate about renewables and supports origination in the Midwest from Lightsource bp’s Denver office.

Scott Byer, Director of Origination

Scott joined Lightsource bp in early 2022 after nearly two decades working in power trading, asset management and mid-marketing with a strong focus within the Western Interconnection region. His role is one of cooperation, helping partners find energy solutions while originating win/win scenarios.  To accomplish this, Scott works cross-functionally with many groups within the company. He says it’s a challenging, constantly changing, and an exciting space to work within, and his driven colleagues energize him to constantly push his own boundaries. He works remotely from Houston, Texas.
