Finance Minister Urges Citizens to Invest in Treasury Bonds
Minister of Economy and Finances, Delina Ibrahimaj spoke this Tuesday about the procedures to be followed to invest in treasury bonds, revealing that they are securities issued and guaranteed by the Albanian government and there will be counters at the Bank of Albania as well as a space on the website of her isntitution for citizens to be informed about the conditions and procedures to be followed.
In the joint conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Ibrahimaj said that it is very important for individuals to have a money management culture to take care of family finances and be good investors.
“Let’s talk about how we can make our population better aware of investing in government securities. It’s a topic that hasn’t been touched on much since interest rates weren’t at the level they are today. We talked about the increase in electricity, inflation and all the measures that the government has taken to affect the Albanian economy so that the impact of the war was as small as possible. We have not touched the element of interest rates. Central banks, starting with the US followed by other central banks, began to raise key interest rates. The Bank of Albania has also increased interest rates. At first there was a base rate of 0.5, today it is 2.75%.
The reason why we are here today and gathered to talk is to encourage individuals to invest in government bonds. Individuals today have an investment opportunity that has higher returns than other opportunities available in the markets. They are titles that are issued and guaranteed by the Albanian government. We are talking about treasury bonds. Today we will start an awareness campaign to explain how to invest in treasury bonds. The central bank has also come to our aid, opening counters in 6 cities for the purpose of trading treasury bonds and providing information on the procedures to be followed. If the three-month treasury bonds had a low rate, today they have an interest rate of 2.78%.
The government also has longer-term bonds and during these years has worked to increase their maturity. The interest from the market was very high. On the official website of the Ministry of Finance from today there is a detailed section explaining treasury bonds and how citizens can invest. We will set up counters for better financial education. We are working with a national strategy as it is very important for individuals to have a money management culture as it is the only way to take care of family finances and be good investors”, stated Ibrahimaj.
