Sacramento man arrested after multi-day armed robbery crime spree; woman also arrested

A 39-year-old Sacramento man has been arrested in connection with a string of early morning armed robberies at businesses in Sacramento County last week that at one point involved a stolen car, authorities said. A woman was also arrested in connection with the crime spree.The first robbery happened around 5 a.m. July 25 when the suspect, John Vang, took money from the cash drawer at a McDonald’s on Sheldon Road and East Stockton Boulevard, Elk Grove police said. Vang pointed a firearm at a worker who confronted him before leaving on a motorcycle, police said.Phillip Reno is the assistant manager at the ARCO AMPM convenience store right next to the McDonald’s at Sheldon Road and East Stockton Boulevard. He said it is shocking something like this happened so close to where he works.”It is a little wild, the fact that it’s just spur, out of nowhere,” Reno said. “It’s kind of scary, you know, it could happen to us. Luckily It hasn’t happened to us or any of my coworkers.”Two days later, Vang broke into an Enterprise Rent-A-Car business around 6 a.m. and took cash and other property, police said. Soon after, he knocked on the door of a closed Chipotle on Elk Gove Blvd. and Franklin Blvd. and requested water. When a worker unlocked the door, Vang pulled a firearm and demanded money, police said. It’s not clear if he was given any. As he was leaving, he allegedly fired a shot at the ceiling.Vang’s next alleged crimes on the list took place on Saturday, July 30, according to Elk Grove police.Around 5 a.m., he pulled into the drive-thru at a McDonald’s at Elk Grove Boulevard and Interstate 5, then pulled a gun on an employee while demanding the cash register drawer. After he fled the scene, police determined the car he was in had been stolen from a nearby fast-food restaurant, Elk Grove police said.Galt police said they received an alert just before 8 p.m. about a stolen vehicle used in the Elk Grove armed robbery. They found the car involved on the 800 block of Delane Drive, but the driver fled by getting into another vehicle, police said.Another officer in the area found the new vehicle and tried to make a traffic stop. At that point, a woman believed to be involved with the earlier stolen vehicle, a Honda, exited the car, Galt police said.The male driver fled, and police chased him from Galt into Elk Grove on Highway 99.Vang was eventually taken into custody on Highway 99 north of Elk Grove Blvd.Elk Grove Police told KCRA 3 this whole situation is a rare occurrence for their community.”I’ve been with Elk Grove PD for 15 years, and I haven’t seen something like this where that many incidents occurred within a very short period of time,” Elk Grove Police Sgt. Jason Jimenez said.Police said the case is still under investigation, as they try to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the alleged crimes.”The motive at this point is unknown, as to why did what he did,” Sgt. Jimenez said.Vang was booked at the county’s main jail on charges that include robbery, burglary, possession of stolen property, vehicle theft and felony evading, Elk Grove police said. He’s due in court on Tuesday and bail has been set at $250,000. The woman involved was arrested for vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle and also booked at the main jail, Galt police said.
