‘Unfinished business!’ Brexiteer Tories tipped to take advantage of Downing Street chaos

Irexit campaigner Hermann Kelly has revealed that Brexit-backing Conservative MPs are likely to sense an opportunity to steer the direction of the Government amid the ongoing “partygate” scandal engulfing Number 10. With Prime Minister Boris Johnson under pressure to resign Mr Kelly believes some Tories will see Brexit, and the Northern Ireland protocol in particular, as “unfinished business.”

Mr Kelly told Express.co.uk: “I think Steve Baker and Mark Francois and all the guys there will sense that they have an opportunity here.

“They want to take it to get someone in power who actually believes what they say and says what they believed and will stand up for proper…people in Britain 2016 voted for Brexit.

“That certainly has not been achieved in the north of Ireland because the north of Ireland is the single market for goods it is the Customs Union for goods. It hasn’t happened in the north of Ireland.

“There’ll be a lot of people very cheesed off about that and there will be some people who will say that Brexit is unfinished business, and they want to finish that business.”

It comes as Boris Johson fights to hold onto the keys of Number 10 amid continued uproar over lockdown breaching parties at Downing Street.

Mr Johnson apologised last Wednesday for attending a “bring your own booze” party in the Downing Street garden in May 2020, when the rest of the country was in lockdown, sparking furious calls for him to resign.

Police have launched their own probe into multiple events in No 10 after being passed information from an inquiry into the allegations of partying by senior civil servant Sue Gray.

At the same time, the Prime Minister is challenging the EU over Brussels’ “maximalist approach” to implementing the Northern Ireland protocol which London blames for causing frictions in trade across the Irish Sea.

Mr Kelly, leader of the pro-Irexit Irish Freedom Party also pinned the blame for the Northern Ireland protocol on the Irish Government in Dublin Government.

He branded Ireland’s Leo Varadkar and Micheál Martin “invertebrate europhiles” for the leading politicians’ anti-Brexit stance.

Mr Kelly warned that Irish taoiseach Mr Martin and Mr Varadkar, his coalition partner, “will do everything possible” to prevent the UK from making Brexit a success.

He told Express.co.uk: “So the Irish taoiseach [Prime Minister] at the time Enda Kenny and Irish commissioners, Irish ambassador to Britain, they were all campaigning, actively campaigning against Brexit in Britain.

“Which I think is a bit of a cheek actually you shouldn’t interfere.

“But they campaigned actively against Brexit they were very disappointed, and I think shocked that the vote was passed.

“They’ve done everything to inhibit a Brexit taking place ever since.”

He added: “Leo Varadkar and Micheal Martin are invertebrate europhiles who are happy for all of Ireland to be under Brussels’ control.”
